Overview

At Glance, an award-winning app recognized as one of App Annie’s Top 10 Breakout Apps Worldwide in 2020, I designed interactive features and motion experiences that captivated millions of users. My work focused on enhancing user engagement during live events and creating intuitive interactions for lock-screen content delivery.

Introduction:
Glance Live Show brings interactive entertainment directly to users’ lock screens, featuring real-time content from influencers, celebrities, and brands. However, we noticed a high drop-off rate when the host was late or during idle moments, leading to decreased engagement.

As the lead interaction and visual designer, my goal was to design an engaging, gamified experience that kept users entertained while waiting—ultimately increasing retention and interaction with the live show.

Our primary challenge was to design an engagement layer that would reduce user drop-off and provide value in idle time, making waiting enjoyable rather than frustrating.

Problem Statement

Engagement Drop-off During Live Shows: Many users at Glance were dropping off from live shows, especially during idle periods when the host was late or the show hadn’t started yet. These idle moments created a gap in user engagement, leading to frustration and increased churn.

Objective: The goal was to minimize these drop-offs by keeping users engaged during the wait time, providing an enjoyable and interactive experience that held their attention, even when the live show experienced delays or hadn’t yet begun.

Research & Insights

We began by conducting user interviews and data analysis to identify the reasons behind user drop-offs. Key findings included:

Boredom: Users grew disengaged when waiting with nothing to do.

  • Lack of Interaction: The idle period felt passive and unengaging.

  • Varying Preferences: Different users wanted different things—some preferred active interaction, others preferred passive entertainment.

These insights shaped our design approach, leading us to develop multiple pre-show engagement strategies to cater to varying user needs.

Ideation & Conceptualization

During the ideation phase, we explored multiple solutions to enhance user engagement and minimize drop-offs during idle periods before the live show and when the host is late .

Based on user research and engagement patterns, we developed three primary concepts like Video flow, Game flow & Quiz flow—along with supporting screen designs to handle various states of the live show:

  1. Interactive Game (Bubble Pop Game)
A interactive game where users pop bubbles to reveal rewards or facts, keeping them engaged while waiting for the show to start.

  1. Josh Meter (Tap Engagement Meter)
we conceptualized a Josh Meter to foster a sense of community and excitement. The Josh Meter encouraged users to tap their screen repeatedly, building momentum as they competed to see how many users were tapping in real time. The feature displayed the total number of participants and a breakdown of cities where users were actively tapping, creating a shared experience of anticipation before the show.

  1. Countdown & Host-Joined Screens

As the live show approached, a countdown timer (e.g., “5 seconds to go!”) created urgency and excitement, holding the user's attention. Once the host joined, we seamlessly transitioned to a "Host has joined" screen, clearly signaling the start of the show and keeping users aware of real-time updates.

  1. Host-Late Screen
When the host was delayed, we designed a welcome screen with clear, reassuring messaging (e.g., "The host will join soon!") to minimize frustration. Additionally, we added a real-time feature for the host to share a personal message explaining the delay, offering transparency and keeping users informed.

  1. Quiz Flow (Pre-Show Quiz)
Light quizzes about the upcoming show, providing users with fun challenges while they waited.

  1. Active Josh Meter
Throughout the pre-show journey, the Active Josh Meter displayed the number of users actively tapping.

  1. Welcome screen
When users tap on the lock screen, they're greeted with an interactive ad that directs them to a live show.

North Star Design Principles

Engage at All Times

Keep users engaged, even during waiting periods or delays, with interactive content.

Real-Time Clarity

Provide real-time updates and clear visual cues to maintain user trust and attention.

Build Excitement

Use countdowns and dynamic elements to create urgency and anticipation.

Empathetic Communication

Address delays with transparent, reassuring messages to reduce frustration.

Solution

To address user drop-off before the live show, we developed three key interactive solutions: Video Flow, Game Flow, and Quiz Flow. Each solution aimed to enhance user engagement and anticipation.

1.Video flow

2.Game Flow

3.Quiz Flow

Exploring Engagement: A Breakdown of Three Interactive Flows

Below, we'll dive into the Video Flow, Game Flow, and Quiz Flow, showcasing how each uniquely contributes to keeping users entertained and connected.

  1. Video flow

2.Game flow

2.Quiz

Objective

Engage users with a seamless live stream experience while maintaining interaction.

This flow guides users through a live video experience, starting from entering the show to the host’s arrival.

Outcome and Impact

Increased User Engagement:

User interaction during the waiting period increased by 60%, with 70% of users participating in the Josh Meter taps and quiz activities.

The Josh Meter saw an average of 2,000 taps per live session, fostering a sense of community with users actively competing for higher engagement levels.

Post-show feedback revealed that 90% of users rated the pre-show activities as enjoyable, contributing to a 25% increase in positive reviews for the platform.
